You know, it occurred to me while reading this how refreshing it is to see such dynamic, "unrealistic" artwork, full of unbridled energy, with not a single traced photo in sight. It happened on the second page where we see the people of the Savage Land holding spears - each one with a strip of cloth tied around it. Why show a strip of cloth wrapped around a spear? Because it looks cool. Gritted teeth look cool. Biceps bigger than your head looks cool. If I want realism I'll look out the window.

You're describing the kind of artwork that would appeal to a child, and as Brodie says, I'm all man.

Oh please. I hate it when people try to act tragically hip by talking bad about artists like Madureira and Jim Lee and Michael Turner (RIP). Who cares if it's unrealistic? Do you really read comics for realism? Joe's artwork is striking, visually appealing and instantly recognizable. And in particular it works for this comic. Would anyone really argue that you should put a Hitch or Tony Harris on a comic like this?

There are hundreds of reasons to hate Ultimates 3, but the art isn't one of them. It's the only appealing thing in the damn book.

I'm a man. I don't need to pretend to hate something just because people foolishly criticize it as childish. If that was the case, I wouldn't be able to read comics either.

I think he was using a Mallrats quote. How's you comic collection coming, Brodie?

  • Jon Plante 3 months ago

Oh it's still big, but I've been trading the... Uh... comics? What the hell are you talking about? I don't collect comics! Comics are for kids!

Yeah. Got that when I read it. I saw Mallrats.
